Largo Considers Road Paving Improvements

Largo continues to work to prioritize and plan road paving projects for 2013-2018. This story's map shows roadway and infrastructure improvement projects tentatively planned through 2015 based on a report to the city commission.

The Largo City Commission decided Jan. 15 to have the city staff return in April with a plan of road improvements for the next six years, said City Engineer Leland Dicus.

The plan is to consolidate pavement, transportation, wastewater and stormwater improvements to save on costs. When the projects are done separately sometimes pavement needs to be patched and restored, which adds to the costs, the city reports.

Largo plans to look into alternate ways to fund paving improvement projects. The city currently pays for its roadway improvements through the County Gas tax. By consolidating pavement and other infrastructure improvements, the city can also consider using Capital Improvement Plan funds, Dicus said.

Largo's asphalt pavement roadways have a replacement value of over $50 million, according to the city report.

The city also plan to look into alternate ways to preserve and rehabilitate roads, which will optimize the pavement's performance, Dicus said.
