Largo Standoff Ends Peacefully

Largo police say a man accused of threatening to kill his girlfriend, her son and himself was brought into custody Saturday.

LARGO, FL — A standoff between Largo police and a man who allegedly threatened to kill his girlfriend, her 5-year-old son and himself came to an end without incident Saturday.

According to the agency, officers were alerted to a problem in the 1700 block of South Jefferson Avenue just before 3 p.m. May 6. A woman called 911 and told dispatchers her boyfriend had been holding her and her son hostage and was threatening to kill them. The woman and child managed to escape the home and notified authorities from a neighbor’s residence, a Saturday night email from the police department said.

Police who responded to the scene set up a perimeter and began evacuating nearby homes. Officers tried to contact the man inside “via phone, social media and megaphone,” the agency noted. Those efforts failed.

The agency’s tactical apprehension and control team was called out, the email said. When that unit’s efforts to contact the man failed, several windows were breached. Police say they found the man inside one of the bedrooms. He was taken into custody without further incident just before 6 p.m.
