Water Leak Scam Has Sheriff Urging Caution

People posing as 'water department' employees are scamming their way into Pinellas County homes and stealing valuables.

LARGO, FL — The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be very wary of people who may knock on their doors professing to be with the “water department.”

It seems two scammers have been making the rounds, telling residents they have water leaks in their homes that must be checked out. The sheriff’s office says the story is a ruse meant to give the scammers access to victims’ homes.

“After gaining entry into the home, one suspect distracts the victim while the other suspect steals various jewelry and other valuables,” a May 5 email from the sheriff’s office said. “Detectives say three citizens of Pinellas County have been targeted by this scam within the past 10 days.”

So far, the reports have come in from Seminole and the city of Redington Beach. Deputies, however, want everyone in the county to be mindful of the ploy.

At present, detectives believe they are dealing with two male suspects, both between the ages of 40 and 50. The first man is described as having a heavy build with a beard and may wear glasses. The second man has a slim build. The two were last seen riding in a black, full-size Dodge Ram pickup, the agency noted.

The scammers, the sheriff’s office said, have targeted elderly victims so far.

Detectives are imploring residents to not let anyone into their homes without first verifying their status of employment by first contacting their local water department or the sheriff’s office at 727-582-6200.

Anyone with information that might help lead to arrests in the case or the discovery of additional victims is asked to call Detective Weil at 727-582-6337. Tips may also be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-873-TIPS or by going online to www.crimestoppersofpinellas.org.
