Amazon.com Tax Breaks Would Add Up to About $1 Million Yearly

Hillsborough County Commissioners will ponder an ordinance that paves the way for Amazon.com to enjoy a property tax break that amounts to just over $900,000 a year for seven years when they meet Wednesday, July 17.

They’re also looking for public input on the plan that’s meant to sweeten the deal to entice the online retail giant to build new operations in south Hillsborough. 

If the company comes here, Hillsborough stands to gain hundreds of new jobs with an estimated 75 of them paying nearly $50,000 a year. It will also still see property tax collections increase by $913,680 since the exemption would only cover 50 percent of Amazon.com’s tax bill during the 7-year period, according to the agenda item.

Amazon.com has announced its interest in building a wholesale fulfillment center in the South Shore Corporate Park.

The proposed tax exemption comes up on the county’s agenda during the Wednesday, July 17 commission meeting. The public hearing is set to begin around 2 p.m. at County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd.
