Fallen Officers Honored Virtually

National Police Week is under way with a national 'virtual' roll call of the fallen officers in every state, including Florida and Hillsborough County.

As National Police Week observances continue, Lutz residents who want to find out more about those who died in the line of duty need only visit a national database to learn about fallen officers from all over the United States.

The database also features 762 officers from Florida.

The Officer Down Memorial Page is a virtual remembrance of officers who have died in the line of duty. The website includes a comprehensive, state-by-state list of fallen officers.

Information on how the officers died and how long they had been in law enforcement are included in the database.

There have been 12 line-of-duty deaths in Hillsborough County since Officer Down Memorial Page volunteers began collecting research. And five in Pasco County.

Of the 12 in Hillsborough, one is Deputy Mark Longway who was killed in a vehicle accident when his patrol car collided with a tractor trailer on Florida Avenue.

Longway was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had served with the Hillsborough  County Sheriff's Office for six years.
