1 Dead, 15 Vehicles Damaged After Car Crashes Into Pole

A driver slammed into an electrical pole in the Wynwood section of Miami sending live power lines and debris onto a number of parked cars.

MIAMI, FL — A 45-year-old man was killed and more than 15 vehicles were damaged when a live power line came crashing down in a Wynwood neighborhood late Sunday afternoon. The incident was triggeed when a four-door sedan crashed into an electrical pole at 150 NW 21 Street around 4 p.m., according to Miami Fire Rescue and the Miami Police Department.

"Once units arrived they had one vehicle that crashed into an electric pole, at which time the electric police fell and brought wires down on cars," Chief Scott Dean of Miami Fire Rescue told Patch. "A couple cars ended up catching on fire."

The driver of the car was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to Officer Michael Vega of the Miami Police Department.

The victim was later identified as David Sherrod King.

The police department's Vega Told Patch that a group of officers and civilians pulled the driver from the car and Miami Fire Rescue brought him to Ryder Trauma.

No other injuries were reported.

"No one else was in that vehicle or any of the other vehicles that were ... hit by debris," according to Vega. "There was more than 15 vehicles that actually had some sort of damage whether it was just a scratch or a broken window due to the debris falling down."

Vega said that traffic around the area was still being rerouted as of Monday morning.
