Retired FL Deputy Dressed As Grinch Gave Onions To Speeding Drivers
In a 20-year tradition in the FL Keys, a deputy dressed as The Grinch handed out onions to school zone speeders.

FLORIDA KEYS — A retired deputy with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office dressed as The Grinch on Friday to enforce traffic laws and target speeding drivers in school zones, the agency shared in a social media post.
Rather than handing out tickets, Col. Lou Caputo — donning the Dr. Seuss character’s green costume — gave drivers who were pulled over in the school zone for going 5 mph or less over the speed limit a choice: they could get a ticket or receive an onion, WUSF reported.
“He gave out quite a few onions,” the sheriff’s office wrote.

Caputo launched The Grinch initiative more than 20 years ago after the live-action movie starring Jim Carrey was released, the Keys Weekly reported.
“We educate people during the holidays to come through the school zone, but slow it down a little bit, pay attention — because in the holiday season, people are distracted,” he said.
