6-Foot-Long Shark Bites Fisherman's Hand In Florida Keys: Report

A fisherman was airlifted to a Miami-Dade County hospital Sunday evening after a shark he caught bit him, the Miami Herald reported.

MIAMI, FL — A fisherman's big catch over the weekend landed him in the hospital where he is currently recovering.

According to the Miami Herald, an angler, whose name hasn't been released, was bitten on the hand by a 6-foot-long lemon shark in the Florida Keys while trying to remove the hook from its mouth.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told the newspaper that the man was trying to release the shark back into the water.

The angler was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami. His condition was not immediately known.

According to FWC, lemon sharks are prohibited from harvest in Florida state waters. They can grow up to 9 to 10 feet in length and feed on a variety of bony fishes, crustaceans, mollusks, rays, small sharks, and occasionally on sea birds.
