1. Video footage captured on New Year's Eve showed BASE jumpers dropping off the 50-story Icon Brickell Tower 3, also known as the W Miami Hotel Tower at 485 Brickell Ave. BASE stands for Building, Antenna, Span, and Earth and is considered an "extreme sport." A manager at the hotel said they were not aware that the participants planned to jump off the building. No police report has been found in connection to the incident. (WPLG Local 10)
2. The smoking ban at Miami Beach began on Sunday as part of a bill signed into law in June 2022 by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that allows cities and counties to regulate the smoking of tobacco products at beaches and parks. Anyone who violates the ban could face a maximum punishment of a $100 fine and up to 60 days in jail, but arrests remain at the discretion of police, according to officials. (NBC Miami)
3. At least 500 migrants landed in the Florida Keys over the last several days in what the local polcie are calling a "crisis." Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay took aim at the federal government in a new release on Monday. Most migrants appear to coming from Cuba. (WSVN)
4. Disney's Aladdin will return to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County starting today from Jan. 3-8. The new produciton features a full score for guests to enjoy, including five cherished songs from the Academy Award-winning soundtrack and new songs written especially for the stage. Tickets are now available. (Miami's Community News)
5. Miami Worldcenter is continuing its growth path with new business openings. New businesses include a high-end fitness concept called Club Studio, popular dining spot Earls Kitchen + Bar, and luxury swimwear brand Luli Fama through Leap, which supports modern and emerging brands.
