MIAMI, FL — Inter Miami co-founder and owner David Beckham is in talks to transfer Cristiano Ronaldo to the South Florida Major League Soccer team, reports said.

The global superstar has won a record-tying five Ballon d’Or awards for player of the year and was named the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2008, among many other honors. He’s also the all-time leading scorer in international men’s soccer with 117 goals, according to EuroSport.

While Beckham had previously expressed interest in Ronaldo, he recently reached out to the Portuguese player’s representatives, The Sun reported.

The 37-year-old superstar played for the team early in his career. He was signed for $12 million when he was just 16 years old, a record for a player his age, according to Biography.com. During his time there, he led the team to three Premier League titles.

He left England in 2009 for Real Madrid in Spain. He also spent several years playing for Juventus in Italy before returning to Old Trafford in 2021 and has been unhappy ever since.

In a TV interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo said he was disappointed by the lack of changes at Manchester United in the 13 years since he left, The Athletic reported.

“I was in Real Madrid nine years and three in Juventus. And when I arrived, I thought everything will be different, you know, the technology, the infrastructures and everything. But I was surprised, in a bad way, let’s say in that way because I saw everything was the same,” he told Morgan.

He added, “At United, the progress was zero, in my opinion. To compare with Real Madrid and even Juventus, that they follow the rest of the world, so the technology, especially in terms of training, nutrition and conditions of, eat properly and to recover better than before surprised me. Manchester right now to compare with that club, I think it’s behind in my opinion, which is something that surprised me. A club with this dimension should be the top of the tree in my opinion and they are not, unfortunately.”

Ronaldo is part of the Portugal World Cup squad that will compete when the tournament kicks off Sunday in Qatar. Though he’s achieved great success with his club teams and personally, he’s never won a World Cup, the world’s biggest soccer competition.

In the tournament’s first round, Portugal will compete in Group H against Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea.

Sick with a stomach bug, Ronaldo missed a warm-up match between Portugal and Nigeria on Thursday.
