Own A Piece Of Art From Umbrella Sky In Coral Gables

Unfortunately, the sun will be coming out again over Giraldo Plaza. That means the umbrellas will be closing for good on Monday, Sept. 17.

CORAL GABLES, FL — It's been hovering over us in rain and shine — a whimsical umbrella display suspended over Giralda Plaza. But, while it's brought a deluge of selfies with its colorful yellow, orange, blue, green and fuchsia umbrellas gracefully dancing over the bustling pedestrian promenade, the umbrellas will be closing for the last time on Monday, Sept. 17.

But "the fun with umbrellas doesn’t have to end. You can own a little piece of the Umbrella Sky project," explained Katherine Dagand of the Coral Gables Community Foundation, which will be on Giralda Plaza pre-selling the umbrellas from the display for $25 each.

Each umbrella comes with its own authenticity stamp and proceeds go to the Foundation's Community Arts Endowment fund for future public art projects. Click here for more information on how to grab an umbrella with a story and support public art at the same time.

More than a million visitors have gotten to see the more than 720 colorful umbrellas that make up the display in the three cities where it has been shown. Coral Gables was the first city in South Florida and only the third in America to host the unusual Umbrella Sky art project.

The internationally recognized public art display visited Paris and Lisbon before landing in the Miami for a two-month run.

The project was made possible through a partnership between the city of Coral Gables, the Coral Gables Community Foundation and the Business Improvement District of Coral Gables.

This Friday, a photographer will be on hand to help visitors capture their best selves under the colorful canopy. Giralda Plaza is located in the 100 block of Giralda Avenue in Coral Gables.

The display was created by Sextafeira, which means Friday in Portuguese. The company is from Portugal.

Coral Gables is no stranger to public art projects. Last year, the city introduced the kinetic artwork of Carlos Cruz-Diez along crosswalks in front of City Hall and the Coral Gables Museum.

The Venice in the Gables display features eight-foot replicas of Venetian mooring posts all uniquely painted by local artists in the downtown area.
