Edison High Student Arrested After Showing Knife To Classmates

The student was taken into custody by a Miami police officer who just happened to be at the school on Friday.

MIAMI, FL — A Miami Edison High School student was arrested Friday after he produced a knife in front of classmates in the school cafeteria. The arrest was made by a Miami police officer who just happened to be on the campus to make a presentation. The student was only identified as a 15-year-old freshman.

The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m., according to John Schuster of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, who said that the student was disarmed by school employees.

"The student was with another group of students and produced a knife," Schuster told Patch. He said that the student is not believed to have threatened his classmates with the knife.

"We had a city of Miami police officer who was actually visiting the school for a presentation," Schuster explained. "We are very grateful that he was there because he immediately interceded, apprehended the student and took the knife."

The student was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and misdemeanor unlawful display of a weapon, according to Schuster, who said that no one was injured in the incident.

Edison was not evacuated or placed into lockdown as would be the typical protocol for such an incident.

"You want to keep students safe where they are," Schuster said. But in this case, the officer was on the scene. "It was all very, very quick," he added. "We do not have a motive yet."

The school is located at 6161 NW 5th Court in Miami.
