FL Child Killed After Woman Unintentionally Fires Gun: Police

Police said a woman was handling a gun inside her Florida home when it discharged and fatally struck a male child.

PEMBROKE PINES, FL — A child has died after police said a woman mistakenly fired a gun inside a Florida home.

According to the Pembroke Police Department, the shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday near 180th Avenue and SW 12th Street in the Coconut Reef community — which is about 45 minutes from Miami.

Police said a woman was handling a gun inside her home when it discharged and fatally struck a boy.

"Both individuals are family members. The firearm was discharged unintentionally due to negligence and mishandling," police said in a news release.

Police said the child was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital by Pembroke Pines Fire-Rescue and died despite all life-saving efforts.

"The Pembroke Pines Police Department wants to remind the public to educate themselves on safely handling and securing firearms at all times," the police department added.

Police said charges will be forwarded to the State Attorney’s Office after they finish the investigation.
