In his Jan. 6 letter, Hassan said his client, the Proud Boys’ former national chair, was targeted by President Joe Biden’s administration for his political views.
“Henry ‘Enrique’ Tarrio was portrayed throughout the Government’s case as a right-wing extremist that promoted a neo-fascist militant organization,” Hassan wrote in the letter, which was obtained by the Hill. “Henry is nothing more than a proud American that believes in true conservative values.”
Hassan described Tarrio as a “young man with an aspiring future ahead of him” and claimed his client is "nothing more than a proud American that believes in true conservative values,” according to NBC News.
The attorney told CBS Miami that he has already been in touch with people who will assist Tarrio in his transition after leaving prison.
"Granting this pardon would allow (Enrique) to reintegrate into a family that is extremely supportive and would further demonstrate commitment to lawful, peaceful, and constructive contributions," Hassan wrote to Trump, according to reports. "It would also enable him to support his family fully and contribute meaningfully to the community."
His mother, Duarte Tarrio, told Local 10 News that her son was hopeful that Trump would grant the pardon.
“He was happy, ‘Hey, today is certification.’ Finally, this should have happened years ago,” she said of a conversation she had with him Monday. “(He was) taken away for 22 years for something that, really, he didn’t do.”
