Florida Continues To See Coronavirus Spike But No New Record

The number of new coronavirus cases in Florida would have been enough to set a new record on Tuesday or Thursday but not Sunday.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of new coronavirus cases in Florida would have been enough to set a new record on Tuesday or Thursday but not Sunday when state health officials reported 3,494 new cases of the virus after four record-setting spikes over the past week.

The latest record of 4,049 new cases was just set on Saturday following a string of 1,000-plus case days.

The total number of cases in Florida reached 97,291 on Sunday, up from 93,797 over the previous 24-hour period.

Six Florida counties reported 17 new deaths Sunday. That compares to 40 deaths on Saturday, 43 new deaths Friday, 43 new deaths Thursday, 25 new deaths Wednesday, 55 new deaths on Tuesday, eight new deaths Monday and six new deaths last Sunday.

Health officials reported 98 new hospitalizations on Sunday as state health officials reported 13,037 total hospitalizations, up from 12,939 a day earlier. The number of deaths from the coronavirus rose to 3,161 from 3,144.

Miami-Dade reported 10 new deaths Sunday. Broward County reported three new deaths.

Highlands County reported one new death as did Indian River County, Pinellas County and Seminole County.

Miami-Dade reported 25,790 cases of the virus Sunday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 11,155 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 10,754 cases.

Those three South Florida counties are still considered the epicenter of Florida's outbreak.

Florida had a 6.1 percent positive test rate for the virus based on 1,600,335 tests Sunday. The percentage of positive cases has experienced a slight upward increase over the past week.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 5,580 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 4,914 cases.
