Florida Ends Second Straight Week Of Coronavirus Records
Florida didn't set any new coronavirus records Sunday, but that's only because Saturday's record was so high.
TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida didn't set any new coronavirus records Sunday, but that's only because Saturday's record was so high.
Florida health officials reported a one-day surge of 8,570 new cases on Sunday compared to Saturday's 9,585 new cases.
Miami-area beaches will shut down over the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend and possibly longer to stem the spread of the deadly virus.

"I could foresee a Fourth of July where you had throngs of people on the beach — very difficult to keep social distancing, people getting together, especially young people getting together," Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez told reporters Saturday.
The mayor said the percentage of positive cases in his county, Florida's largest, spiked from 7 or 8 percent to as high as 25 percent in recent days.

Florida also set a record of 8,942 new cases Friday following a string of records over the past two weeks, prompting state officials to suspend the consumption of on-premises alcohol at bars to slow the spread of the deadly disease.
State health officials reported a total of 141,075 cases, up from 132,545 cases over the previous 24-hour period.
The total number of deaths from the new coronavirus in Florida rose to 3,419 from 3,390 a day earlier.
Six Florida counties reported 29 new deaths Sunday. That compares with 24 on Saturday, 39 deaths Friday, 46 new deaths Thursday, 45 new deaths Wednesday, 65 new deaths Tuesday, 12 deaths Monday and 17 deaths last Sunday.
Miami-Dade County reported six new deaths. Palm Beach County reported 11 new deaths.
Pinellas County reported five new deaths. Lee County reported four new deaths.
Collier County reported one new death as did Manatee County and Polk County.
Health officials reported 14,244 total hospitalizations up from 14,136 over the previous 24-hour period. That represents an increase of 108 new hospitalizations.
Miami-Dade reported 33,714 cases of the virus as of Sunday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 14,620 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 13,389cases.
Those three South Florida counties account for 61,723 cases of the virus or about 44 percent of the state's total.
In contrast, those three counties accounted for 59 percent of Florida's cases on April 19, indicating other Florida counties now account for a greater share of Florida's cases, which have also spiked among people under 40 for the first time since Florida's outbreak began in early March.
Florida had a 7.5 percent positive test rate for the virus Sunday based on 1,883,244 tests. The percentage of positive cases has also increased over the past two weeks.
Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 9,918 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 9,671 cases.
