Florida Reports 3rd Record-Setting Day For New Coronavirus Cases

Florida health officials reported 3,822 more coronavirus cases on Friday, the third one-day record for new cases this week

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported 3,822 more coronavirus cases on Friday, the third one-day record for new cases this week after health officials reported 3,207 new cases on Thursday and 2,783 new cases on Tuesday.

The total number of cases in Florida reached 89,748 Friday, up from 85,926 over the previous 24-hour period. Officials reported 1,758 new cases on Monday and more than 2,000 new cases on both Saturday and Sunday following a string of 1,000-plus case days.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said many of the new cases involve people who are between the ages of 20 to 30 and asymptomatic. He said that age group has significantly better clinical outcomes than people 65 and older, who account for 86 percent of the deaths in the state.

"Understand a new case is just a positive test. It doesn't mean someone is sick," DeSantis said. "A lot of them don't have symptoms, and a lot of them are not going to present any type of clinical consequence in terms of our health care system, but you are unmistakably seeing a lot of cases skew much younger."

Sixteen Florida counties reported 43 new deaths Friday over the previous 24-hour period. That compares to 43 new deaths Thursday, 25 new deaths Wednesday, 55 new deaths on Tuesday, eight new deaths Monday, six new deaths Sunday, 48 new deaths Saturday, 30 news deaths Friday and 47 new deaths Thursday.

Health officials reported 197 new hospitalizations from the coronavirus across Florida over the previous 24-hour period. The number of deaths from the coronavirus reached 3,104 Friday, up from 3,061 a day earlier.

Miami-Dade reported five new deaths Friday. Broward County reported two new deaths. Palm Beach County reported 14 new deaths.

Hillsborough County reported four new deaths. Manatee County reported two cases as did Marion County, Volusia County and Washington County.

Charlotte County reported one new death as did Escambia County, Gadsden County, Hendry County, Indian River County, Lee County, Pinellas County and Polk County.

Miami-Dade reported 24,376 cases of the virus Friday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 10,448 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 10,116 cases.

Those three South Florida counties are considered the epicenter of Florida's outbreak. Florida had a 5.9 percent positive test rate for the virus based on 1,533,876 tests as of Friday. The number of hospitalizations in Florida increased to 12,774 from 12,577 from a day earlier.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 4,982 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 4,274 cases.
