  1. A young boy from Massachusetts caught a great white shark off the Florida coast near Port Everglades in South Florida on Jan. 17, according to multiple news reports. The shark was about 130 inches or 10 feet 10 inches long and weighed around 450 pounds, according to media reports. (Miami Patch)
  2. An off-duty Miami-Dade police officer shot and killed a man at a Publix supermarket parking lot in Homestead last Saturday, according to police. Investigators said the man fired gunshots prior to incident. The off-duty officer involved in the shooting has been identified as Francisco Moreno. (WSVN)
  3. Jury selection started Monday in the trial of a former Miami-Dade teacher accused of sexual battery with a student. It is not the first time the teacher has been accused of inappropriate behavior with a student. The victim already won a civil trial where the victim was awarded $6 million. (WPLG Local 10)
  4. Matthias von Herrath, M.D. has been named the new scientific director of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. "I look forward to advancing the Institute’s mission of accelerating curing type 1 diabetes," said Dr. von Herrath to South Florida Hospital News. Herrath recently served as a professor at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in San Diego. (South Florida Hospital News)
  5. Level 6 is Coconut Grove's latest rooftop dining concept designed by Studio Munge. The rooftop restaurant is serving Spanish-inspired tapas, entrees, and cocktails. Level 6 is located at 3480 Main Highway in Coconut Grove and open daily. (Time Out Miami)
