Here are the top stories today in Miami:
- The sedition trial of Proud Boys leader and South Florida resident Enrique Tarrio and four others started on Thursday as prosecutors accused the group of taking aim at "the heart of our democracy" when they stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 in support of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Tarrio was also the former Florida state director of Latinos for Trump. The trial was originally set to begin last August. Florida has the highest number of people charged in the Jan. 6 Insurrection. - Two construction workers were injured on Thursday morning in South Florida in the area of West 18th Avenue. An investigation into the incident is now underway. Police said the workers fell 25 feet from a lift while working. (WSVN)
- A 24-year-old man is being accused of preying on a teenage girl at the Kendall Ice Arena in Miami-Dade County’s The Hammocks neighborhood, according to authorities. The suspect is facing charges of lewd and lascivious battery on a child aged 12 to 16, lewd and lascivious molestation on a child, and lewd and lascivious conduct on a child. Anyone with information is asked to contact police. (WPLG Local 10)
- A South Florida woman from Broward County is facing child neglect and other charges days after winning the Florida Lottery. The suspect is accused of forcing a child to testify incorrectly about being abused and is now being held without bond. (NBC Miami)
- FTX Arena is being renamed The Arena, according to the Herald. FTX filed for bankruptcy in recent months and has been part of a larger crypto meltdown in the country. The original deal the county signed would have provided Miami-Dade County with $90 million over 19 years. (Subscription: Miami Herald, Free: The Next Miami)
