Hit-And-Run Driver Leads Florida Trooper On Harrowing Chase

WATCH: Dashcam video shows the wild chase between Florida Trooper Vanessa Franceschi and the driver who struck her patrol car.

MIAMI, FL — Newly released dashcam video shows a harrowing high-speed chase between Trooper Vanessa Franceschi of the Florida Highway Patrol and a driver who allegedly crashed into her patrol car on purpose while she was conducting a traffic stop along the Florida Turnpike earlier this year. The video shows Franceschi weaving in an out of traffic, driving on the shoulder and finally ramming the man's car before fellow officers swooped in to help.

"I just got hit and the guy's fleeing in the car right now," Franceschi can be heard saying on the police radio as she gave chase to the white Honda Civil near mile marker 29 in the southbound lanes of the turnpike.

Florida officials described the trooper's actions as heroic.

"Trooper Franceschi heroically pursued and skillfully conducted a Pursuit Intervention Technique causing the suspect to stop," according to FHP officials. "The suspect was arrested on scene, ensuring the safety of all other motorists on the road."

The incident happened near Miami on April 24.

“This suspect’s actions were cowardly and Trooper Franceschi’s quick and courageous actions exemplify the best of the Florida Highway Patrol and all law enforcement officers,” said Executive Director Terry L. Rhodes of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles at the time.

“That she was targeted because she is a law enforcement officer is outrageous and we must continue to support our brave heroes by letting them know malicious attacks against law enforcement will not be tolerated in our communities," Rhodes said.

FHP Director Colonel Gene S. Spaulding added that he was grateful Franceschi suffered only relatively minor injuries and was able to chase down the suspect.
