1. Miami-Dade Commissioners on Tuesday deferred a resolution directing Mayor Daniella Levine Cava to explore creating a loan program alongside financial institutions to assist the associations and condo unit owners needing funds for the repairs. The measure calls for the mayor to within four months detail what is needed to create the program, list funding sources and say what else commissioners should do to fire up the initiative. 2. An arsonist has sparked concerns in South Beach after he was caught on surveillance video torching a local restaurant's patio furniture. Security camera footage at the Sherbrooke Hotel near Ninth Street and Collins Avenue captured the subject in the act at nearby Rosetta Bakery, Friday morning. (WSVN)
3. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins announced Thursday she will run for a revamped Congressional District 27 seat held by U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, R-FL. In the 2020 presidential election, 49.76 percent of the revamped district went for former Republican President Donald Trump. Democratic President Joe Biden received 49.49 percent of the vote. 4. The City of Opa-locka and officers with the city's police department are facing a federal lawsuit in connection with the 2020 arrest of a teen that was caught on camera. Police body camera footage captured the September 2020 arrest of then 19-year-old Jasef Castro-Reyes by Opa-locka officers after family members called police to report that he was acting erratic and violent. 5. A COVID-19 outbreak on an Alaska-bound Carnival Cruise ship traveling from Miami infected dozens of travelers and overwhelmed crew members. Passengers say more than 100 people on the Carnival Spirit tested positive for COVID-19 when the ship docked Tuesday in Seattle, overwhelming staff and forcing many to isolate or quarantine in area hotels because of sickness and exposures, according to King 5 news.
