Man Kills Miami-Dade Deputy With His Own Weapon: Police

Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, was attacked and fatally shot after responding to a minor collision Friday afternoon, authorities said.

MIAMI, FL — A 27-year-old deputy with the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office was fatally shot with his own weapon after he responded to a minor traffic crash Friday afternoon.

Deputy Devin Jaramillo was called to the collision in the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street where he was attacked by a man, NBC News is reporting. Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz saida verbal altercation turned physical before the man disarmed the deputy, using the gun to shoot Jaramillo several times.

Jaramillo was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The man who shot Jaramillo died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after the shooting, sources told CBS News Miami.

Cordero-Stutz fought back tears as she shared news of Jaramillo’s death with several high-ranking sheriff’s officials, the Miami Herald is reporting.

“He’s not only a deputy. He’s a son, a brother and a friend,” she said. “He gave the ultimate sacrifice, his life, defending you, and we need to understand as a community that this is just unacceptable.”

“I ask our community to pray for the family of our fallen deputy — to pray for all of us because we are family, and we are hurting,” she said.
