Miami-Dade Teacher Carjacked; 13-Year-Olds Charged

Two 13-year-olds were charged with carjacking a teacher's car as she was leaving Biscayne Gardens Elementary School.

MIAMI, FL — They were old enough to carjack a Miami-Dade school teacher's car but not old enough to drive, according to Miami-Dade Police. Two 13-year-old boys were charged Monday with the Sept. 25 armed carjacking of a teacher's car.

"The two 13-year old subjects are not students at the school where the armed carjacking took place and where the victim was employed as a teacher," Detective Lee Cowart of the Miami-Dade Police Department told Patch.

Court documents said that the children both gave incriminating statements in connection with the carjacking outside Biscayne Gardens Elementary School. Both boys were identified by the teacher.

The incident happened shortly after 5 p.m. as 59-year-old Flora Martinez was confronted by the armed children as she was getting into her dark blue Toyota Corolla in the teacher's parking lot.

One of the boys allegedly pointed a black handgun at Martinez and said, "Gimme the keys," according to court documents.

Detective Argemis Colome of the Miami-Dade Police Department said earlier that Martinez turned over her keys and ran toward the school. The second boy entered the vehicle and both drove away.

But Colome said the teenage carjackers didn't get very far.

"The subjects crashed the vehicle into a curb as they exited the parking lot, causing the vehicle to become disabled," he said. "Both subjects then exited the vehicle and fled on foot."

Martinez suffered minor injuries as she was running back to the school.
