MIAMI, FL — The Miami Marlins promoted Caroline O’Connor to president of business operations on Monday.

Not only does this make her one of the highest-ranking women in Major League Baseball, but it also makes the Marlins the first U.S. major sports franchise to have two women serving simultaneously as its president and general manager, according to The Associated Press.

In 2020, the team named Kim Ng its general manager — the first female GM in the league.

O’Connor is the second woman to serve as president of an MLB team, AP reported. Catie Griggs with the Seattle Mariners was the first.

“When I talk to young girls, I really like them to see me in my role because I didn’t feel like I had that role model,” O’Connor said. “And I want people to see themselves when they see me and know that it is a possibility.”

She joined the Marlins in 2017. With a significant business career — previously working for companies like IBM, UBS Investment Bank and Morgan Stanley — she’d always been passionate about sports and was eager to join the team.

“I was an avid baseball fan growing up,” she told the Miami Herald. “When it was spring, it was time to go to baseball games. Definitely was always a fan.”

Hired by then-CEO Derek Jeter, O’Connor initially served as senior vice president and chief of staff. She was named chief operating officer in 2019.

“We are fortunate to have someone with Caroline’s business acumen and vision leading our day-to-day business operations,” Marlins chairman and principal owner Bruce Sherman said in a statement. “Her passion and drive for success is unmatched in our game and the South Florida market. Her leadership will continue to guide the Marlins organization toward our goal of sustained success while strategizing additional new ventures to grow our business and enhance our brand recognition.”
