BOYNTON BEACH, FL — Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a newborn baby girl who was found floating naked in the Boynton Beach Inlet. The baby was found on Friday about 75 to 100 feet east of the shoreline. Police did not know how long the infant had been in the water or how she died.
"The female infant was no more than 14 days old," the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said Monday. The unidentified child was spotted on the ocean side of the Inlet, according to police.
Capt. Steven Strivelli of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Special Victims Unit told reporters on Monday that the infant was found dead around 1 p.m. but he did not know whether the child had died prior to being placed in the ocean.

"We've actually tried our best to identify nationality of the child but we cannot rule out any one nationality the child may be," said Strivelli. "At appearance, it looks maybe mixed but we can't confirm that."
He said that police are waiting for additional information to come from the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office.

"We've got to confirm cause of death," Strivelli said. "That's the main issue that we're dealing with right now."

"It's gut-wrenching," Strivelli added. "We hate seeing it and we really desperately want to get to the bottom of what happened."
