6 FL JCPenney Stores Sold In Nearly $1B Deal

FLORIDA — Six Florida JCPenney stores are among 119 stores that were sold to a Boston private equity firm.

Onyx Partners paid $947 million in an all-cash transaction for the stores, according to Copper Property CTL Pass Through Trust, which took control of 160 JCPenney stores when it declared bankruptcy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The companies expect to close on the deal on or by Sept. 8.

"The Buyer has now completed its due diligence, and its deposit under the Agreement is non-refundable," Copper Property Trust said in a news release.

According to a list released by USA Today, six Florida locations were sold in the deal, including:

• Westfield Brandon: 331 Brandon Town Center Mall, Brandon
• Westfield Countryside, 27001 US Hwy 19 N., Clearwater
• Westfield Broward, 8000 W Broward Blvd Ste 900, Plantation
• Pembroke Lakes Mall, 11401 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines
• The Mall at Wellington Green, 10308 W Forest Hill Blvd., Wellington
• Pier Park, 206 Bluefish Dr., Panama City Beach

All affected stores are currently open, but it's unclear whether they will remain operational under new ownership.

JCPenney has 44 Florida locations in Altamonte Springs, Aventura, Boynton Beach, Clermont, Coral Springs, Davenport, Daytona Beach, Fort Myers, Gainesville, Hialeah, Jacksonville, Jensen Beach, Kissimmee, Lake City, Lakeland, Melbourne, Merritt Island, Miami, Naples, Ocala, Ocoee, Orange Park, Orlando, Panama City, Pensacola, Plantation, Pompano Beach, Port Charlotte, St. Petersburg, Sanford, Sarasota, Spring Hill and Tampa.

Since JC Penney's 2020 bankruptcy filing, roughly 200 stores have closed, but 44 remained operational in Florida, including the six just sold.

At the time, a spokesperson for the company said, "We look forward to continuing to serve our customers at our nearly 650 store locations across the country and online at jcpenney.com.
