MIAMI BEACH, FL — The man shot late Friday afternoon in South Beach remained in critical condition Saturday as Miami Beach police attempted to piece together what led to the shooting.

Ernesto Rodriguez of the Miami Beach Police Department said police have been unable to identify the man who was found in an alleyway of Meridian Court behind a residence in the 200 block of Meridian Avenue.

Rodriguez said police were responding to a 9-1-1 call of a burglary and shooting that occurred around 4:45 p.m. when they found the gunshot victim.

WPLG-TV reported the gunshot was possibly fired by a Miami Beach resident during an apparent break-in attempt.

"Everybody that I've spoken to, they heard one shot and it must have been a pretty good shot," Florida State Rep. Michael Grieco told the TV news crew shortly after the shooting.

Rodriguez said police are conferring with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office on possible charges.

"At this point, our investigation remains open and active," he said. Police were not immediately releasing the name of the resident involved pending further investigation.
