South Florida Man Killed In Shootout With Florida Trooper

Police are investigating a shootout involving a Florida State trooper that ended with the death of a 33-year-old South Florida man.

DELRAY BEACH, FL — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a shootout involving a Florida State trooper that ended with the death of a 33-year-old man.

Steve Gilbert of Pompano Beach was killed Tuesday night following a police chase along Interstate 95, according to Lt. Yanko Reyes of the Florida Highway Patrol, who said police later learned that Gilbert was driving a stolen vehicle.

Reyes did not disclose where the shooting took place but WPLG-TV reported that Gilbert was killed behind a Delray Beach home off the Atlantic Avenue exit of Interstate 95.

"A Florida Highway Patrol trooper attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driving recklessly on Interstate 95, near Delray Beach, Florida," Reyes said. "The vehicle failed to stop, resulting in a short vehicle pursuit. The reckless vehicle crashed into another vehicle and the subject exited his vehicle, firing shots at the responding troopers."

Reyes said Gilbert was killed when the trooper opened fire. The trooper was not identified. He was placed on non-disciplinary leave.

"Troopers on the scene attempted CPR on the subject after the incident," Reyes said. "A rifle and handgun were recovered at the scene."
