Suspect Dies After Police Shooting On Ocean Drive; Officer Stable

The suspect who was shot by police during an altercation Saturday night died from his injuries, according to Miami Beach police.

MIAMI BEACH, FL — A Miami Beach police officer remained in stable condition Sunday after being stabbed along tourist-favorite Ocean Drive.

Meanwhile, the suspect who was shot by police during the altercation, died from his injuries, according to Ernesto Rodriguez of the Miami Beach Police Department.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said later that the wounded officer "has a long road to recovery" but is expected to be OK.

"Tonight reminds us that we should be grateful that every day our police put themselves in harms way so that we don't have to," the mayor said. "I also thanked his family because a police officer's family feels the perils confronting their loved ones."

Rodriguez said officers opened fire on the suspect, who was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. The injured police officer was also taken to Ryder.

Rodriguez did not immediately say what led to the shooting and stabbing of the police officer.

Ocean Drive was closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic between 9 Street and 11 Street in an area that is typically packed with tourists and locals on a Saturday night.

"Our scene is contained," Miami Beach police said following the incident. "No public safety threat exists. Police said the officer-involved shooting took place at 10 Street and Ocean Drive shortly after 9 p.m.

Neither the police officer or the suspect had been identified as of Sunday morning.
