Woman Shot In Gun Battle Involving Miami-Dade Cops

MIAMI, FL — One person was detained and a woman was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition Wednesday night when a gun battle erupted between Miami-Dade police and a male riding a scooter.

Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said the incident happened around 9 p.m. at NW 66 Street and NW 22 Avenue.

"Robbery Intervention Detail detectives observed a male riding a scooter and attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the area of NW 66 Street and 22 Avenue," according to Zabaleta. "As detectives activated their emergency equipment to effect the stop, the male subject opened fire at the officers with a handgun and an exchange of gunfire ensued between the officers and the subject."

Zabaleta said the woman was apparently struck by a bullet as she sat in her vehicle. Police found her at NW 54 Street and 22 Avenue.

"A firearm has been recovered at the shooting scene, and one male subject is detained while the investigation continues," Zabaleta said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has opened an investigation as in the case of all shootings involving Miami-Dade police officers,

Zabaleta said the person on the scooter fled on foot.
