📰 News we're reading

1. Miramar officials join trade mission to South Africa to expand global business opportunities (caribbeannationalweekly.com) — Miramar residents should know two city commissioners just joined a state-led trade mission to South Africa to open new markets for local businesses. Working with Broward County and state partners, they promoted Miramar’s entrepreneurs and explored collaborations in innovation-focused sectors that could bring jobs, investment, and long-term economic growth back home.

2. BCPS plans school boundary changes and campus consolidations for 2026–27 (thewestsidegazette.com) — Families in Miramar should prepare for major boundary changes that would send some students now zoned for Hallandale High to Miramar High starting in 2026–27. Broward Schools is also proposing several consolidations and grade reconfigurations countywide, with final decisions expected at the January 21, 2026 School Board meeting.

3. Do you have a frame around your Florida license plate? Note a change in the law (miamiherald.com) — Miramar drivers should double-check their license plate frames, because the city is warning residents that new penalties now apply if anything obscures your tag numbers or registration sticker. A recent change in Florida law turns some plate-frame issues into misdemeanors with fines up to $500 and possible jail time, especially for devices that hide plates from toll or traffic cameras.

4. Florida lawmakers push to arm college staff after FSU, Brown shootings (sebastiandaily.com) — A Miramar-based state representative is among the lawmakers pushing to expand Florida’s school guardian program so trained staff at public colleges and universities could carry guns, following shootings at Florida State and Brown University. Supporters say it will improve campus safety, while opponents, including the Miramar Democrat, warn that adding more weapons to classrooms could increase risks.

5. A Miami-Dade incinerator? County commissioners get (a little) closer to a decision (miamiherald.com) — Miramar residents may want to watch Miami-Dade’s next move, as county commissioners edge closer to siting a new $2‑billion trash incinerator just a couple of miles from the city. After dropping earlier plans near Doral and Opa-locka West airport, commissioners now want rival bidders to craft a joint proposal, despite cost and environmental concerns that could affect nearby communities.
