Five Things You Should Know Today

Make the most of your Friday and weekend.

1. It’s the second day of the Chasco Fiesta. Here’s what’s on tap for tonight:

  • Native American Pow Wow -Runs through Sunday, March 27- 7 p.m.
  • Contemporary Christian Family Night  (Sims Park Amphitheater), 6 p.m.-11 p.m.
  • Chasco Coronation Ball (Spartan Manor) 6 p.m. Queen Chasco and King Pithla will be crowned at this year’s ball.

2. On Saturday, join a tribute to U.S. Army Sgt. Michael Rowe, who lost his life in The Iraq War.  The memorial marking the fifth anniversary of Rowe's death starts around 3:30 p.m. on March 26 at the home of father Dave Rowe, at 4509 Edith Street, New Port Richey.

4. The Chasco Fiesta Street Parade takes to downtown New Port Richey tomorrow at 1 p.m. Get to the flea market along the parade route ( in the parking lot at Circle Blvd, Central Ave. and Adams Street) and meet your Patch editor and staff.

5. Not everyone who attends the parade enjoys it. Ruby Beaulieu, executive director of the Florida Chapter of the American Indian Movement, and others will be protesting the Krewe of Chasco float on Grand Blvd once the parade starts. Beaulieu said she feels the float’s creators and riders make a mockery of Native American culture by co-opting cultural symbols, like headdresses and buck skin, “in a derogatory way.”
