Five Things You Should Know Today, August 16

We've got a couple ways to get involved as a citizen. Would you like to know more?

1.    We’re getting some relief today, temperature-wise. It’ll only feel as hot as hot as 97 due to the heat index, but the actual temperature will be near 90. There’s a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms or showers.

2.     The New Port Richey City Council is meeting for a work session on an idea to hire a manager for the nonprofit at 6 p.m. and then will meet afterward for a regular session, at which new public records fees and other issues will be on the agenda. Both meetings will happen at City Hall.

3.     Speaking of Greater New Port Richey Main Street, 27 participants voted in our on whether the city should hire someone to manage the nonprofit.  Twelve agreed it should; 10 thought it should not; three thought someone should be hired full-time, but not with city money; two thought the program was fine and should be left alone.

4.     State Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, is holding a protest today against a proposal to raise sinkhole insurance rates offered by Citizens Property Insurance, the state insurer of last resort, by more than 2,000 percent in some areas, including the Tampa Bay.  The protest takes place  at 7530 Little Road from 4-6 p.m.
