NEW PORT RICHEY, FL — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a Wednesday evening crash on DeCubellis Road that left a 74-year-old New Port Richey man dead. According to the agency, Michael Beardi was at the southeast corner of the DeCubellis and Ridge Road intersection around 5:30 p.m. Jan. 4. Beardi, a highway patrol report said, attempted to cross westbound with his bicycle. He was using a marked pedestrian crosswalk, but was "facing a steady red pedestrian control signal," the report noted. At that time, Jerome Barraia, 82, of New Port Richey was heading south on DeCubellis in a Hyundai Sonata. Troopers say Beardi entered Barria's path and was struck by the Sonata. Beardi was taken to a local hospital following the crash, but died from his injuries. The investigation remains active with charges pending the outcome.
