Happy Thanksgiving Memories

Check out a story of Thanksgiving past.

We put out a call for local funny stories and photos from Thanksgivings past and received a response. Check out this story from Vanessa Dazio-Ekren.

I can cook a pretty mean turkey. Tender. Juicy. Flavorful. Just right. No worries. No need to call the Turkey Hotline. I am secure. I am confident. I own my kitchen. I am the Turkey Queen.

Or, I was, until our son Adam came from Michigan with his family for Thanksgiving. Adam wanted to cook the turkey. He said brining was the only way to go. My husband wasn’t too keen about his boy cooking the Thanksgiving bird. What was brining anyway?

After some fervent bedtime “debate” followed by some heavy arm twisting, Big Daddy decided to trust that his son could handle such an awesome responsibility.

Brining was a three-day affair. Adam carefully made his brining mixture, and tended to the turkey daily until the big day. On Thanksgiving Day, Adam placed his turkey in the oven with great flourish and drama. We were scared. Adam was confident.

Finally, the bird was cooked. Adam pulled that turkey out of the oven with a great dramatic flourish. We all collectively inhaled. But, that bird actually looked good! In fact, that bird looked great!

The moment boy became man in my husband’s eye was our first bite. Delectable. Outstanding. Awesome. Divine! The perfect turkey. Our son in now the Turkey King. He has taken my crown. I bow to his expertise. Because, hands down, his turkey was the best turkey we ever had.
