ORLANDO, FL — An gunman involved in a standoff with police at Orlando International Airport Tuesday night has been brought into custody. The end of the standoff in the airport's Level 1 A-side rental car area was announced around 10:15 p.m. May 30 via the Orlando Police Department's Twitter feed.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina said his agency was notified about the disturbance around 7:28 p.m. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man holding a gun. The man pointed the gun at officers, and said, "shoot me, shoot me," Mina said during a Tuesday night press conference.

The man, identified as Michael W. Pettigrew, 26, was in a mental crisis, Mina said, adding that there was no rush to arrest him.

As the situation remained very much fluid earlier in the evening, the police department took to Twitter to debunk rumors. “There is no active shooter,” the police department tweeted shortly after 9 p.m. “No shots fired. Suspect is contained.”

Airport officials noted heavy traffic congestion as the standoff was under way, and reported that the FFA had put a Traffic Management Program in effect for arriving flights. "Arrivals may be delayed at departure point," the airport warned via Twitter Tuesday night.
