Conscious Connection Heals Body, Mind, Spirit

The Ozona wellness center offers a variety of services, all designed to treat, heal and lift the spirit.

Years ago, wellness centers were often portrayed in a negative or dubious light.

Once looked upon as having too many spiritual overtones to be taken seriously as a place for treatment of medical and mental illnesses, the centers took a back seat to traditional medical clinics.

Today, wellness centers are enjoying an upswing in popularity — and credibility — as many people are turning to alternative forms of treatment for everything from bad backs to bruised psyches.

At  in Ozona, Dr. Anna Sweetnam is thankful that centers like hers are finally being recognized for what they really are — facilities that help heal the mind, body and spirit.

“Today’s young parents want to know how to reach their kids. They’re more understanding that there’s something bigger going on,” said Sweetnam, who has master's degrees in teaching and metaphysical philosophy. “People are starting to want to know instead of being afraid to know.”

Although she has an extensive background working with troubled children, Sweetnam is quick to point out that the Conscious Connection treats people of all ages with a wide variety of ailments.

“We have a classroom where we teach hypnotherapy and stress management, a yoga fitness class, three infrared saunas for detoxification, and a life school that teaches life lessons,” she said. “We truly treat the mind, body and spirit here.”

Located on Orange Street in quaint downtown Ozona, the center shares a building with the organic , adding another dimension to the overall theme of being healthy and well.

In addition to the available classes, each taught by wellness practioners who rent their own space, and the adjacent eatery, the Conscious Connection features a gift shop, a used furniture nook and an outdoor area for group therapy.

“Three things bring people in the door: yoga, the café and the gift shop,” Sweetnam said.

But no matter why people come in, Sweetnam is just glad they are starting to realize that places like hers provide valuable healing tools for a myriad of life's problems.

“One woman said, ‘I’ve been seeing a therapist for two and a half years, and you helped me in one visit,’ ” Sweetnam said. “People walk in the door, and they get it now. They want to be conscious.”
