Update: U.S. 19 Reopens Following Gas Leak

The roadway was shut down during rush hour between Nebraska Avenue and Alderman Road in Palm Harbor.

Traffic has reopened in both directions on U.S. 19 in Palm Harbor , deputies said shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The roadway was shut down during rush hour between Nebraska Avenue and Alderman Road as crews repaired two leaks that occurred when a private contractor mistakenly struck a gas line around 5 p.m., officials said.

There's no reason to be worried about respiratory distress or evacuations, according to Palm Harbor Fire Rescue spokesperson Liz Monforti. The leak was 300 to 500 feet away from any buildings, and the wind is helping to dissipate the gas, she said.
