Witty Knitters Share Love of Yarn and Conversation

If you happen to be at the Palm Harbor Library or Starbucks on U.S. 19 and Nebraska on a Monday afternoon, you're likely to run into this small army of knitters.

They swarm in silently, armed with large needles and bags of yarn. Once they find a place to sit, they settle in and the chatter and knitting begins.

If you happen to be at the Palm Harbor Library or Starbucks on U.S. 19 and Nebraska on a Monday afternoon, you're likely to run into this small army of knitters.

They first met last summer at a free beginner's knitting class at the Palm Harbor Library. The eight women liked knitting and each other's company so much, they decided to continue to meet every week.

"None of us really knew how to do it," said Rosalie Slover of the beginning knitting classes.

They now call themselves the "Witty Knitters" and meet between 3 and 4:30 p.m. every Monday, alternating their meeting spot between the Palm Harbor Library and the Starbucks.

The weekly knitting session has a medical benefit for teenager, Francella Diaz, 15. The activity helps prevent her epileptic seizures. Francella attends each week with her mother, Odessa. So far, Francella has knitted two scarves and just finished a pair of adorable brightly-colored slippers using yarn that is aptly named "Skittles".

The women say they enjoy each other's company and like to share knitting tips.

"We find it very relaxing and we get to meet new people," said McMann.
