Flooding Potential High in Pinellas, With More Rain in the Forecast

is still days away, but the potential for flooding in Pinellas County is more of an immediate concern, say forecasters at the National Weather Service.

A flood watch has been issued for the county through Wednesday night, Aug. 22. This means that flooding is possible within the next 24 to 36 hours.

Nicole Carlisle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the flooding threat doesn’t come from Tropical Storm Isaac. Rather, it’s from a “stalled frontal boundary over us, and we’re expecting more rain today.”

Rainfall amounts of at least 2 to 3 inches, and possibly more this evening, are likely across the region, according to the NWS forecast. Residents living in flood prone areas are warned to take action to protect their property.

Forecasters are calling for a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms in St. Pete Beach and the Pinellas Beaches, with more storms likely on Thursday.
