Fort De Soto to Celebrate 50th Anniversary
Fort De Soto will celebrate its historic anniversary May 11.
One of Pinellas County's crown jewels prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday, May 11.Â
Fort De Soto has has been named America’s Best Beach, and one of the 20 most beautiful beaches in the world, according to Trip Advisor.
"To help celebrate this significant anniversary, the Friends of Fort De Soto are planning a big beach bash," a county news release said. "Activities throughout the day will be reminiscent of the opening of the park, featuring the Tampa Bay Water Ski Show and special guest, reigning Miss Florida 2012 Laura McKeeman."

The Fort De Soto park property was used as a gunnery and bombing range during World War II.
According to the county, there will be sea oat planting at 9 a.m. followed by a re-dedication ceremony. At 10: 30 a.m., the water ski show will begin. After the show on the Gulf, kayakers will "eco-paddle to the north to the top of the island to continue planting sea oats."
