📰 News we're reading

• Plant City businesses form 'Downtown Merchant Committee' in collaboration with city (baynews9.com) — Downtown Plant City shop owners have formed a new “Downtown Merchant Committee” to work directly with city leaders on boosting foot traffic and revisiting local codes. Members say better signage, clearer rules, and coordinated investment could help more residents discover what’s inside those historic buildings, especially during the busy holiday shopping season. Their list of proposed changes will go to the city manager next.

• Former Texas RB coach linked to Florida position, per report (saturdaydownsouth.com) — A Plant City native could be heading back to his home state as reports link former Texas running backs coach Chad Scott to the same role on Florida’s new staff. Scott, a onetime Kentucky and North Carolina running back, has built an extensive coaching résumé and may soon bring that experience back to Gainesville. Local fans might soon see a hometown product on the Gators’ sideline.

• Ashley Moody slams Harvard for hiring protester arrested for assaulting Israeli student (floridapolitics.com) — A Republican officeholder from Plant City is sharply criticizing Harvard University for employing a graduate teaching fellow who previously faced misdemeanor assault charges tied to campus protests over Israel and Gaza. She argues the decision shows Harvard is not doing enough to combat antisemitism and is using her RECLAIM Act proposal to push for federal accountability of universities over civil-rights violations.
