Chop Shop To Host Charity Event For St. Baldrick’s Foundation
The Main Street salon will donate all proceeds from the March 16 street festival and hair-cutting event to the children's cancer foundation.
St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a charity dedicated to conquering childhood cancers.
Its signature fundraising method is having people shave their heads to help raise money for children’s cancer research, a practice that began in 2000 and surpassed the $100 million mark in 2012, according to the foundation's website.
The Chop Shop, a salon located at 500 Main St. in downtown Safety Harbor, has participated in the shaving events in the past. But this year they are organizing, hosting and running an entire event by themselves for the first time.

“This is our sixth year doing it, our second year here at this location, but the first time we’re doing the whole show ourselves,” general manager Tiana Stebbins said.
“There’s a lot that goes into it.”

Stebbins and shop owner Mike Platow stress their event isn’t just about shaving heads; it’s about families coming out to have a good time and contribute to a great cause.
In addition to haircuts there will be a giant party outside the shop, complete with a kids fair, live music, a car show, raffles, food and more.

“St. Baldricks has been around for over 10 years, and about 90 percent of their funding comes from events like this,” Platow said. “We’re trying to raise $25,000, and we’re hoping the people of Safety Harbor come out to support us.”
“It’s the most fulfilling day of the year for us.
The event will run from 1-6 p.m. on March 16, and the entire block in front of the shop between Fifth and Sixth avenues will be blocked off.
Platow said roughly 50 volunteers are needed to make the event happen, including cosmetology students from a nearby school to assist with the cuts.
Patrons are encouraged to pay more than market price for their haircuts and other salon services, as every dime will be given to St. Baldrick’s.
“All the money raised that day will go to the charity no matter what service they get, not just hair cuts,” Stebbins said. “We really want to make this event a success.”
Local eateries Poblano’s Mexican Grill and Marco’s Pizza will provide food, the proceeds of which will also go to the charity.
