Firmenich Proposal Protest Scheduled for May 6

The candlelight event will take place on the eve of the Board of County Commissioners meeting on the issue.

The Richman Group's latest proposal for the Firmenich property is apparently steaming towards approval following the Pinellas Planning Council's recommendation in favor of the plan last week.

But there is a group of Safety Harbor residents that is refusing to let the issue get passed without fighting it until the very end.

Barbara Hugg, who helped organize a previous protest at the Firmenich property, is organizing another event - a candlelight vigil on May 6, the eve of the Board of County Commissioners meeting on the matter.

Hugg left this comment yesterday on our article about the PPC's decision:

Hello one and all. This is a call out for folks who are opposed to the Richman Group Project being developed on the Firmenich property.

Once again, come stand with us in one last stand against this project.

Date: Tuesday May 6th
Start time: 5:30 until whenever

The county Commission is the following morning in Clearwater at 0930. I know it is a cruddy time for folks, but if you can, come on out. There are several us that plan to speak, even our very own Nancy Besore, who also plans to attend the gathering on SR590 in front of the Firmenich property.

She made that announcement at the city commission meeting last night.ahe also spoke at the PPC as a concerned Safety Harbor resident.

This really is the end of the road and our last chance to stop this very large apartment complex going in with access only via SR 590.

Please mark you calendars...

Indeed Commissioner Nancy Besore did address the vigil during the 'commission reports' portion of Monday night's city commission meeting.

"I'd like to see you in front of Firmenich...at 5:30 on May 6th, that's before our commission meeting," she said. "I'm going to be there from 5:30 to 6:30 and I'm going to have my little candle."

Patch reached out to Barb Hugg to get her thoughts on why residents who oppose the Richman Group's proposal should continue to fight the issue.

"Basically we need all the support we can get and I believe we can make a difference. We already have, but it just hasn't been enough," she wrote.

"We are as passionate about this not passing now as we were when the sign went up."
