Is Joey Biscotti Becoming Famous?

No, Joey Biscotti is not an Italian American with a sweet last name, but a bakery in Safety Harbor getting lots of attention from fans.

Joey Biscotti is only a month old but already (almost) a celebrity in the Tampa Bay area.

The Safety Harbor bakery with a catchy name just received a positive feature in the Tampa Bay Times, with the headline, "Joey Biscotti hits the sweet spot in Safety Harbor."

Not bad for owners Joe DeBortoli and Steven Wright, New York transplants who opened their "small batch bakery" at 839 Main St. with no advertising but a lot of goodwill from friends and supporters. They pride themselves on fresh ingredients and freshly baked products that do not sit on the shelves.

Here's a sample of some of the delectables the pair offer. For Mother's Day, Joey Biscotti tweeted: "Sweeten Mom's day with a Hazelnut Double Shot Coffee Cake or Berry Quartet Crisp."

Owning a Main Street bake shop is a new venture for the men. DeBortoli works for Crate & Barrel, and Wright's background is theater. The two had been selling their sweets at farmers' markets and festivals.

The trademark biscotti is made from an old DeBortoli family recipe. In addition to the crunchy coffee biscuits, the pair also makes brownies, cookies, pies, muffins, sweet rolls and cakes.

The bakery clearly is the sweetheart of Safety Harbor but its fanbase is growing. The Times notes the "tall frosted layer cakes, slices of lime coconut squares and, of course, lots of biscotti, their signature cookies made for dunking in tea or coffee."
