With the Tennessee delegates to the Republican National Convention staying in town, Main Street will be called Tennessee Street this week.

When is Main Street not Main Street?

When there are representatives of a political party in town and the city decides to honor them by renaming a street in their honor, that’s when.Β

Safety Harbor city commissioners agreed last week to rename Main Street in honor of the delegates from the state of Tennessee who are staying at the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa while the Republican National Convention is taking place in Tampa.Β

β€œDoes everybody here realize that the delegates from the state of Tennessee are coming to the city of Safety Harbor for the Republican National Convention?” Mayor Andy Steingold asked at the commission meeting on Monday, Aug. 20.

β€œIn light of that, we’ve got a proclamation proclaiming Main Street to be Tennessee Street for the week of August 26, 2012.”

Steingold then read from the proclamation, which stated in part:Β

β€œβ€¦The 2012 Republican National Convention will be held in Tampa, Florida starting on August 27, 2012, and whereas the Tennessee Republican party delegates…will be staying at the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa in beautiful downtown Safety Harbor.”

β€œTherefore I, Andy Steingold, mayor of the city of Safety Harbor, Florida, do herby proclaim Main Street to be Tennessee Street for the week of August 26, 2012.”

Steingold went on to say that the presence of the delegates should benefit businesses in the downtown area, and that it should be an exciting time for the city to have the officials staying in town.

So when you’re travelling down Main Street this week and you notice the street signs are now draped with colorful banners with the word β€œTENNESSEE” emblazoned on them, now you know why.
