Quadrantids Meteor Shower: New Year's Light Show

Fresh on the heels of the Geminids, another meteor shower is set to light up the Safety Harbor sky shortly after New Years.

Attention amateur astronomers and stargazers: The Quadrantids Meteor Shower 2013 will peak in the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 2. What a way to start off the New Year!

The Quadrantids come from an asteroid called 2003 EH1, just as the Geminids did in early December. Unlike that event, the Quadrantids storm is expect to last for only a few hours, according to NASA.com, with a maximum rate of about 80 meteors per hour.

Since the shower is expected to last only a few hours, that means you should look for it in the the morning of Jan. 3, not the night of Jan. 3-4, according to the NASA website.

Earthsky.org reports the Quadrantids peak might be in the hours just before dawn on Jan. 3.

"Face the general direction of north-northeast, but take in as wide an expanse of sky as possible. Watch from about 2 a.m. until dawn," the Earthsky article states.

For those who don't want to brave it outside for the show - or if there is cloud cover over the Harbor - you can watch a Ustream feed of the meteor shower on on NASA.com.

Harborites, will you be heading outside the morning of January 2 to watch the Quantrantids meteor shower? If so, where will you watch it from? Let us know in the comments below.
