Safety Harbor Museum Renovations Progressing
An outdoor area is currently being framed in; the new museum is scheduled to open at the end of October.
Renovations on theΒ Safety Harbor MuseumΒ are continuing as planned, despite some minor setbacks that caused a slight delay in construction.Β
According to Chris Lloyd, site director for GSA Contracting, the work was halted for a bit when asbestos was discovered in a part of the old building that wasn't being used.Β
βOnce we found asbestos, we had to halt everything and make sure we got it all out,β he said. βYou canβt mess around with that stuff.βΒ

Construction is now back on track. A new brick parking area has already been put down, and Lloyd and his crew are currently framing in an outdoor deck that will serve as an interactive area for museum visitors.Β
The museum closed earlier this year as part of a $150,000 project to not only remodel the facility, but give it a new direction by combining aspects of the museum with a cultural center.Β

The new facility, known as the Safety Harbor Museum and Cultural Center, will now be run by the city and feature existing exhibits and artifacts as well as new community-themed activities.Β
Although it was hoped the work would be completed by early September, delays including the Republican National Convention and heavy rains have pushed the planned opening back to late October.Β
