Safety Harbor Student Loves East Lake LEGO Club

Step into the East Lake Library and you immediately notice silence.

But, that's a different story when you step into the library's community room after 2:15 on a Wednesday afternoon. You're immediately greeted by the boisterous sounds of a room packed with kids having gobs of fun. Welcome to East Lake's version of LEGOLAND; minus the drive to Winter Haven, expensive tickets and long lines. 

East Lake Library's LEGO Club is the happening place to be for the elementary school crowd. Many of the kids have been coming here for years. Once a week, they get to dig through bins of LEGOs looking for the perfect pieces to construct their LEGO projects. 

Robby Burns, age 7, lives in Safety Harbor and has been coming to LEGO Club about a year with his mom, Lisa Broome. He was all smiles as he worked on his project.

Jaran O'Day, age 8, is a 2nd grader at Brooker Creek Elementary. He's been coming to LEGO Club with his mother Aunna Elm since he was 4-years-old and he loves it (see video).

Max Wakefield, age 7, is in 1st grade at Brooker Creek Elementary and comes to LEGO Club every week. "It's fun. You get to build anything," Max said excitedly.

Ethan Cruz, age 11, is a 5th grader at Cypress Woods Elementary. His project is a ghost castle. "When you build LEGOs, you get to use your imagination," he said.

Daniel Conner, age 9, was the winner of last summer's LEGO Challenge. He likes to collect vintage LEGOs and can easily identify them. "There's a bunch of cool pieces you can find from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s."

Daniel's been working on a bird of prey that he made with LEGOs. His buddy, Jacob Thiel, age 8, made a battleship that can hold up to five LEGO people.

"I like them because you can build really cool ships and if you want to make it bigger, you can take pieces off and put them on," said Jacob.

The kids work on their LEGO creations and play with friends until LEGO Club ends at 3:15 p.m. Then, each kid puts their name tag on their LEGO project and has someone put their project way up high, on top of the book shelves in the library, where the projects sit until LEGO Club meets the following week.
