The Crimes Against Children detectives of the sheriff's office began investigating the case on Aug. 28 after the 11-year-old sexual battery victim complained of stomach pains. The girl was taken to a local hospital late on Aug. 27 by her mother and the mother's live-in boyfriend who was Johns. At the hospital it was determined the girl was pregnant, according to a news release.
Detectives say the news of the girl's pregnancy made Johns "visibly upset." Then Johns asked the girl's mother for the car keys so he could get some cigarettes. Instead he left the hospital and did not return, authorities said.
